firefox forward, back or any button not working fix

Sometimes you may find certain features of firefox not working after installing or upgrading some software relating to firefox. It could be the forward and back button suddenly greyed out, out certain icons dissapeared…etc.

The problem is 99% due to permission issues. Because you often have to be root to install or upgrade firefox, the permission of certain mozilla files are left at root after the upgrade. What you need to do is to change the permission back to yourself and you fixed the problem.

As mentioned in my previous firefox websearch error blog, the fix is as easy as

sudo chown username:username -R ~/.mozilla/firefox

firefox web search not working? The fix is simple.

If you a are linux user, you are probably affected by this.

after upgrading to the latest version of firefox, you might find that if you login as a user, you can’t use the web search toolbar. This is annoying because the search facility is actually very handy.

Initially, I thought it was because of selinux… but as it turned out, it was user permission. changing your firefox config to your username simply fixed it.

sudo chown username:username -R ~/.mozilla/firefox

Some files used by the web search has root as the owner. The solution was simple but I couldn’t find anything in google yet.
